Travel photography is on the rise as more and more people are leaving their 9-5 jobs to travel the world full-time and make money off their travels.

How do they do it? Well, one way is by creating travel photography tours where photographers take groups of people through places like Thailand or Iceland to capture the most incredible shots possible.

You can use this same idea to get creative with how you make money with travel photography! Here are 8 hacks to help you make money with travel photography!

1) Use Creative Commons photos

One of the best ways to get travel photography gigs is by contributing your work as a photographer for other people’s projects. Sites like Unsplash, Flickr, and 500px all have sections where you can submit your photos for use without payment.

Simply search for creative commons or similar on these sites and you should find a section for that kind of content.

Alternatively, you can create your own website using Tumblr or WordPress and then populate it with photos from sites like Flickr or Unsplash.

You might even be able to use some image editing software to make your images stand out further.

Don’t forget though; being a good photographer is only half of making money with travel photography.

You need to build up your portfolio and attract clients who will pay you for usage rights (this is when they purchase pictures outright). It may take some time, but don’t give up!

2) Create Guides

If you have a specific niche in mind that you can help people out on, whether it’s travel photography or something else, create an e-book full of all your tips and tricks.

Not only will you be helping someone out while boosting your brand, but they will likely share it with their followers too. Win-win! And not to mention, it’s a good way to build up your list which is essential .

3) Shoot For Company

If you’re an aspiring photographer, then one of your best sources of income is going to come from shooting for other people. For example, if you work for a small business that’s looking for promotional photos, you might want to include that in your rate.

Or maybe a local real estate agent has asked you to shoot their latest listings, and they want your images included on their website.

These kinds of assignments can become some of your most profitable over time. But be careful; it’s really easy to fall into doing too much of someone else’s bidding! It’s important to stick with what matters: serving your own vision and pursuing your personal artistic goals and also in photography-imaging-graphic-arts (aka stock photography)

When you’re getting started, make sure you set strict rules around what kind of projects are outside your scope so that no matter how great an opportunity looks or who wants it—you know exactly how much (or little) you’ll charge!

4) Edit Your Photos

One of the most popular, and one of my personal favorite ways to make money from travel photography is by selling your photos online.

Flickr and 500px are two great places for finding buyers (if you haven’t heard about them before). If you have a decent sized portfolio, you can also set up a WordPress website or maybe even sell some prints locally.

The possibilities are endless, but you need great photos first! Be sure to edit your pictures professionally; You don’t want people seeing errors and it looks amateurish if not done right.

For many photographers, editing programs such as Adobe Lightroom are essential tools they use daily while editing their own images or when working on a clients photo session.

5) Stand Out From The Crowd With A Niche Website

The easiest way to stand out from your competition is by developing a specific brand of content. It could be reviews, tutorials, or opinion pieces that you create as content for your website.

Make sure you know what type of topics can help you establish yourself in a niche that is relevant and easy for people who are interested in your services or products. There are many ways you can leverage your passion for photography and find a way to monetize it online.

All it takes is time and persistence. Some may take longer than others, but if you don’t give up there will be someone out there looking for what you have created!

Stand Out From The Crowd With A Niche Website

Think outside of the box when creating your website. Most businesses use all their site real estate to sell their product, or they put contact information at the bottom of every page.

Look into header ad space which is becoming more common on websites around the world and create a unique experience when readers come to visit your site!

Think about how you want users to interact with your content and make that happen so they not only read it but spend enough time on your site so they might consider buying something from you.

6) Offer Photo Editing Services

One of my favorite ways to make money as a travel photographer is by offering photo editing services. Most bloggers who regularly post images on their site need help editing and touching up their photos.

The key to making money in such a situation is twofold: first, you have to do high-quality work, and second, you should offer your services at an affordable rate.

Another benefit of providing editing services is that it will likely be very easy for people to recommend you if they’re happy with your work. Once you’ve built up a solid portfolio and some recommendations, people might even start seeking out your assistance before they publish content (which can be great for getting new jobs).

In addition to photo editing services, it’s also possible to simply license your photos; one popular way to do so online is through stock image websites like Shutterstock or iStockPhoto.

Share your work and start earning.

You’ll typically get paid per image download rather than per hour worked, but if selling just one or two images from time to time can bring in a decent amount of income then it might be worth doing for supplemental income on top of other sources.

7) Start A Youtube Channel About Traveling And Photography

If you’re great at taking photos and you enjoy traveling, starting a travel channel on YouTube can be a fun and easy way to make money.

There are thousands of people on YouTube who make money each month through advertising, so don’t be surprised if some of your viewers see an ad every time they watch your videos.

Also, if you have a specific niche or audience in mind, you can use Patreon to do monthly ask me anything sessions where users pay a small fee (upwards of $20) to ask questions about how you earn money with photography.

Take photos. Post them online for free. Gather followers and go from there! Simple as that.

8) Join An Exclusive Network For Travellers

With social media bringing travellers together, many networks have developed around shared interests and hobbies. If you’re a travel photographer, joining an exclusive photography community could be just what you need to boost your professional profile.

If you belong to a group of professionals on Instagram or another platform, create opportunities for them to see your work by inviting them over for a photo walk.

This will give you instant feedback on your pictures and help build connections that can lead to more paying gigs. These groups often host workshops—offering tips in areas such as equipment selection, composition, editing and more—as well as gallery nights where members come together to show off their latest work.
